Diesel cars are very practical and efficient. This is what everybody loves them for. Especially if it is a family crossover.
Every Thor project starts with a discussion with the vehicle owner. This step defines all the technical decisions that follow.
In this case, the profile is clear. The client owns a Mercedes GLE 2018 diesel, mainly used for family trips and long-distance driving. He values the versatility, interior space and the well-known reliability of Mercedes diesel engines.
His request is simple: he wants to enjoy a true sporty sound when he feels like it, without losing any of the comfort or practicality of his crossover. He does not want to modify the exhaust, increase maintenance costs or risk affecting warranty or inspection compliance.
Requirements validated. Next step: vehicle assessment.
Before any technical work begins, this GLE 2018 diesel is inspected. The key factor to verify is:
Several mounting areas are evaluated to position the Thunder speakers. On this GLE, the rear section near the bumper reinforcement offered the best balance between sound projection, protection and visual discretion.
The trunk provides an ideal location for the Thor control module, protected from moisture and temperature variations.
Conclusion: the vehicle is fully compatible and perfectly suited for a clean installation.
Based on the client brief (strong sound transformation and comfortable budget) and the vehicle assessment (large SUV, diesel engine and sufficient space), the chosen setup is a Thor Level 4 + Echo kit, consisting of two metal Thunder speakers and the additional Echo speaker.
The Level 4 + Echo configuration creates a stereo effect under the chassis, giving the sound a more realistic and spatial dimension, closer to a true performance exhaust system. This is the most relevant setup for a diesel GLE used as a daily vehicle.
The two Thunder speakers were mounted behind the rear bumper reinforcement, using brackets adapted to the GLE chassis. Their orientation follows Thor guidelines: angled downward, facing opposite the driving direction and positioned above ground clearance for protection.
The Thor control unit was installed in the trunk, in a discreet and hidden location. This ensures thermal stability and preserves usable space, which is essential for a family vehicle.
The wiring was routed through the vehicle’s original pathways, preserving the integrity of the Mercedes wiring system. CAN bus connection was performed with the battery disconnected, following Thor protocol. No cutting or soldering on original components.
The module was paired via Bluetooth with the Thor mobile app and programmed specifically for the Mercedes GLE 2018 diesel. This ensures accurate data reading (RPM, speed) and perfect synchronization with real driving behavior.
More than 25 sound profiles are available in the Thor catalog. On this GLE, several options were tested with the client before final selection.
The final choice was a deep and powerful sound, consistent with the size and character of the vehicle.
The goal is never to imitate an exaggerated V8, but to give the vehicle a credible voice that matches its design and positioning.
Once the bumper was reinstalled and all system checks were completed, the vehicle was delivered with a full introduction to the mobile app.
The result is immediate. The crossover retains its family-friendly comfort, smooth driving and reliability. But when activated, the GLE gains a sound presence that matches its premium status.
Engine starts feel more alive, acceleration gains depth, and the driving experience finally reflects the vehicle’s true performance.
The client left with exactly what he was looking for: a car that remains quiet when needed and expressive when desired.
The GLE diesel is designed for versatility, comfort and long-distance driving. As a result, the engine sound is almost completely muted.
Modifying the exhaust is rarely the right solution on this type of vehicle. It is expensive, permanent and often limited in effectiveness on diesel engines.
The Thor system takes a different approach: it enhances the experience without altering the mechanics. That is why it is currently the most relevant solution for premium diesel SUVs.
Whether you drive a GLE, GLC, X5, Q7, Cayenne or any premium petrol or diesel vehicle, Thor offers solutions tailored to your needs and budget.
Driving a Porsche Cayenne means embracing a paradox. On one hand, the Stuttgart crest, a rich motorsport heritage, and the promise of raw driving emotion. On the other, a comfortable, versatile SUV designed to cover long distances in near silence. But a Porsche should be heard. It should have a voice — and that’s exactly what we gave it with the Thor Active Sound system.
When you take delivery of a BMW X5, the first months are all about discovery. You explore the technology, fine-tune the seat position, test the driving modes and enjoy the feeling of a new car. But after two or three years, something changes. The owner knows the car inside out. He understands exactly what it delivers, and more importantly, what it doesn’t. And at that point, one question keeps coming back: “Why can’t I hear anything when I accelerate?” The owner of this 2023 X5 contacted us three years after purchasing it.
The Mercedes GLS is a rolling monument. Nearly five metres long, seven seats, a cabin as hushed and refined as an S-Class, and a six-cylinder diesel engine that delivers its power with almost unsettling discretion. But a flagship deserves a voice. Here is how a Thor Level 4 kit was installed on this GLS 350d.
